Keith awoke early the next morning, but instead of waiting for Bridget to come to him, he decided to explore the city a bit more to get a lay of the land and a feel for the people who lived here. He soon discovered that in the city of Trinkertun, hobgoblins appeared most often. They made up at least half the population, by his estimate.
Next up were regular goblins, which made up about a quarter, followed by ogres, trolls, and finally, torkgoblins. They were far rarer than Keith had been expecting, only making up about three percent of the population.
âAre torkgoblins that rare?â Keith asked as they made their way through the early-morning central market rush.
âPretty much,â Bob said. âTorkgoblins are a branch of the hobgoblin family that forked off a long time ago. They grew larger and more proficient in just about everything. Think of them as a hobgoblin, but better in every way, including looks. Theyâre smarter, faster, and gain more and better bonuses per level. Itâs because of this that they often find themselves in positions of power, especially in clans of hobgoblins.
âIf a hob and a tork ever meet, you can bet that theyâll make way and give deference. A good comparison would be like the vampire race, like the way Cayla treated Lord Trapper.â
It was interesting to hear about the hierarchy of the monster races. Keith had been noticing that any time a torkgoblin moved through the streets, they were given a wide berth by any hobgoblins around.
None of the others gave them that deference, though the goblins tended to steer clear and make way for everyone due to their smaller statures, and everyone made way for the trolls, as they just seemed to plow their way through the crowds. The ogres and orcs, on the other hand, seemed to stick to themselves.
It soon became apparent that the races also liked to stick to their own. The orcs shopped with orcs, the trolls with trolls, and the hobs with hobs. There was some intermingling, as would be expected in a city this size, but not as much as Keith had been expecting. He could sense no tension, though, which was a good thing. A peaceful coexistence was the next best thing to outright friendliness. In fact, he preferred it that way as he trusted it more.
There was also the odd smattering of other races â humans, beast-monsters, vampires, and a couple of elves heâd never seen before.
The pair moved through the crowds like they could read the flows of traffic, easily sliding through the milling monsters as though they were born to do it. Keith moved the same, though he wasnât quite as slim as the elves were, and his armor made it all the more difficult. Additionally, he always felt the need to keep his wits about him, so he regularly looked to his rear, unlike the pair of elves.
âWhat are they?â Keith asked, pointing the pair out to Bob.
They were dark-skinned, their complexions a dark, almost navy blue, with gold markings sweeping up the sides of their faces.
